Before I begin, I just wanted to say THANK YOU to all of you who are voting for my home in the Small Cool contest. It has been so fun to see my number go up and I know it’s all because of you! The contest ends on Friday so fingers crossed!
Now, let’s get to the juicy stuff. As you probably have observed by reading my blog and social media the last few weeks, we have been crazy with projects. At a certain point it was probably pretty obvious what I was up to (and some of you guessed correctly!) so I’m here today to just let it all out.
In less than 24 hours, a team from Better Homes & Gardens will be here to shoot every. single. room. in my house (20+ shots total!) for an upcoming issue of their special interest publication, Do It Yourself Magazine.
I know. I KNOW.
And I’ve been keeping this secret for a long time now. Here’s the backstory.
January 2014 – An editor from the magazine reaches out to me and says that she’s a longtime reader (yes!) and thinks my home would be perfect for the publication. It isn’t 100% certain at this point as she needs to get her internal team to agree, but I’m excited anyways. I send her a PDF with lots and lots of scouting pictures. For each picture, IÂ provide a detailed description of each DIY project.
Mid-February 2014 – I get an email from her that I’ve been chosen for the shoot. We nail down a week in June (this week!). I’ve been asked to keep it quiet on the blog and social media, so I do, but I slowly let family and friends know. I basically spend the last half of February soaking it all up.
Early March 2014 – It’s time to get the projects going. I make a to-do list for each room. Every. little. single. thing. that needs to be fixed must be fixed by the photo shoot date. For example, we still have brass (not the good kind) door hinges in the bathroom that clash with the dark sink and toilet hardware. All of that type of stuff, and more, went on the to-do list whether I thought it was going to end up in a shot or not. The to-do list is 6 pages long.
Early April 2014 – Aaron and I make the decision to renovate the kitchen in time for the photo shoot. This is NOT a project that they requested by any means (they didn’t even know I was doing it until they read about it on the blog) but there was no way I was going to let magazine people in my house with my kitchen looking the way it did. NO WAY. I get pretty overzealous when it comes to these types of situations. Overzealous + can’t-sit-down syndrome = RENOVATE. ALL. THE. THINGS! I tend to overdo it… a lot. It’s a blessing and a curse.
June 7, 2014 – The kitchen is complete. YES. I’m taking the “after” photos today and should have a reveal post for you on Wednesday. I’m so excited to share it with you!
TODAY – I have a little bit to do today but for the most part, WE ARE DONE.
So there you have it! Be thinking of me these next two days. I’ll be wrangling the dogs during the shoot too so it should be interesting. 🙂
I don’t know anything about timing or what issue but as soon as I do know, I’ll fill you in!
